The jury for the Prix Lueur was deeply moved by the show’s focus on cultural exchange: exchange across time, between an extraordinary ancestral artistic tradition and today’s artists and audiences; but also exchange across space, between a string puppetry practice originating from Quanzhou and the audience of the Avignon Festival. The presentation of the sequences through voiceover—highlighting their narrative and mythological dimensions as well as their technical aspects—allows cultural exchange to fully take place, enabling the Avignon public to appreciate the mastery of the Puppet Masters and bringing these ancient puppets so vividly to life.
