Charlotte Bouteille

Theatre Scholar | Lecturer and Researcher in Theatre Studies, Université Paris Nanterre

Charlotte Bouteille is a lecturer and researcher in Theatre Studies at Université Paris Nanterre, and a member of the HAR – Histoire des Arts et des Représentations (History of Arts and Representations) research group.

Her research focuses on documentary and contemporary theatre, particularly the ways in which stage productions contribute to the emergence, circulation, and representation of public debates and political reflections on contemporary issues.

More broadly, her work explores how theatre engages with traumatic historical events—including wars and genocides—and examines the relationship between memory, representation, and theatrical creation.

She is a member of the international digital humanities research programme “Registers of the Comédie-Française”, where she serves as co-editorial director of the digital encyclopedia project “Les Mots des registres”.

Through her research and collaborations with artists, directors, and performers, Charlotte Bouteille investigates the dialogue between theatre, history, politics, and society, with a particular interest in the role of performance as a space for critical reflection and collective memory.
